Viipurilainen Kotileipomo

Bread made of pure local ingredients.

Viipurilainen Kotileipomo is a second-generation family business, continuing the entrepreneurial story of the Ylä-Hemmilä family with over a hundred years of history behind it.

The backbone of Viipurilainen Kotileipomo lies in its sourdough rye and artisan breads, baked from local ingredients and sold in stores. These breads are crafted using traditional methods. The business also includes a café. Bread is taken seriously, but work is always done with a twinkle in the eye. The joy of baking is visible, and the honesty can be tasted.

At Viipurilainen, authenticity, freshness, local ingredients, and responsible operations are core values. In recent years, we have undergone renewal by expanding both our operations and facilities, as well as developing a new range of sliced breads for retail—aiming to create the best sliced bread series in Finland.

A Proud History Carries On

Viipurilainen Kotileipomo was founded in 1924 in Viipuri, a city that, due to the aftermath of World War II, became part of Russia. As a result, the bakery relocated to Lahti, and since then, it has baked its products using local ingredients.

Viipurilainen started as a small local bakery. It went bankrupt in the 1990s and was acquired by Veikko Ylä-Hemmilä—the father of the current entrepreneur brothers. He was an engineer without baking experience, but he understood the value of local ingredients. Around ten years ago, the brothers took over the bakery and grew its turnover by 1000% in the local market. They never abandoned the idea of using pure, local ingredients.

Finland’s Best Sliced Bread Series

Our sliced breads have been well received, and we’ve been baking more ever since—creating jobs and expanding our distribution network. Many of our products are now available nationwide.

You can find our breads extensively across both the Kesko and S Group store chains. In addition, we run our own bakery shop and café in Vääksy, a beloved stop for summer residents of the Päijänne region and travelers year-round.
