Viipurilainen Kotileipomo is a second-generation family business, and as a continuation of the Ylä-Hemmilä family’s entrepreneurial story, it carries a history of over one hundred years.

The backbone of Viipurilainen Kotileipomo is rye and artisan breads sold in stores, baked with sourdough from locally sourced ingredients using traditional methods. In addition, the business includes café operations. Bread is taken seriously, but the work is always done with a twinkle in the eye. The joy of baking is visible, and honesty can be tasted.

Important values for Viipurilainen are genuine freshness, local food, and responsible operations. In recent years, we have renewed ourselves by expanding our operations and facilities, as well as our retail bread selection around our goal: Finland’s best sliced bread range.

A proud history carries forward

Viipurilainen Kotileipomo was founded in 1924 in Viipuri, Finland, which was ceded to Russia after the Second World War. As a result, the bakery moved to Lahti and has since baked its products using local ingredients.

Viipurilainen was once a small local bakery. It went bankrupt in the 1990s and was bought by Veikko Ylä-Hemmilä, the father of the current entrepreneur brothers. He was an engineer with no background in baking, but he understood local raw materials. Eventually, the brothers took over the bakery about ten years ago and grew its revenue by 1000% in the local market. They never gave up on the idea of using pure, local ingredients.

Finland’s best sliced bread range

The sliced breads have been well received, and we have continuously increased production, created jobs, and expanded our distribution area for several products to nationwide coverage.

Our breads are widely available in both Kesko and S Group chains. In addition, our operations include our own bakery shop and café in Vääksy, which is a popular stop for summer residents in the Päijänne region as well as for travelers year-round.
